    Develop a demographic profile of your visitors

    The reason for studying the demographics of your website audience is to allow you to find out about and understand your visitors. Demography helps you define this target audience. You should know as much about the people who are visiting your website as you can. By knowing the make up of your visitors you will be able to communicate with them on a personal level and they will be much more likely to respond to your content in a positive way. Thus, the development of a statistical profile of your website audience can help you compose content that will be appropriate to their needs and interests.



    A demographic profile is a term used to describe a particular grouping of people or a narrow segment of the population at large. Demography provides statistics about distinct groups of people such as their; age, education, religion, political affiliations, race, income, etc.

    Demographic profiles typically involve such things as age groups (e.g. young people as opposed to older segments of the population), income ranges (e.g. people who have more money to spend as opposed to those with less money to spend) and sex (e.g. the physical and emotional differences between men and women).

    A demographic profile can be used to determine what type of website content should be used to achieve the best response from your target audience. It is important that the webmaster tailor the website content and webpage design to match the interests and needs of their visitors. Careful research should be done to match the demographic profile of your visitors to the demographic profile of your website theme and content.

    Remember, success on the Internet is directly related to matching your website content to the people visiting your site. You will have to do your homework on this aspect of website design if you plan on reaching your visitors with your message.     Market share, in terms of website design, is how much of the internet you influence and demographics defines the type of people who visit your website. Thus, your goal should be to increase your presence on the web by appealing to a specific audience.
