Types of website links and how to implement them

    Reference links

Often you, as webmaster, know of other sources of information on the web that support your message or that could expand the knowledge of your visitors. As webmaster it is beneficial for you to provide links to these sources of information. Expanding the range of your visitor's knowledge, about a subject, increases the probability that they will regard you as an informational authority. This will enhance the value of your website content in their eyes.

    Internal links

The tying together of all the pages in your website is an integral part of any website's structure. This is accomplished by employing a network of internal links that continue a thought or expand on information. You can provide these links by employing a sitemap or through your website navigation scheme. Also, the linking of relevant content from one webpage is another way to enhance visitor interaction and it promotes favorable indexing by the search engines.

    Deploying links

When placing reference and/or internal links on your website be sure to provide a brief description as to where these paths will lead. Always furnish a short description that tells visitors the purpose and destination of each link on your website. Deploying a plain list, without descriptions, is practically useless to a visitor. They would have to take the time to check out each link in order to find the information they seek. Adding a couple of lines of descriptive text will provide your visitors with enough information to make an informed choice.

Organize your links for easy access by the people visiting your site. The sole purpose of any link should be to expand upon a subject or to offer information. Clearly linked paths in your website structure should lead to ever deepening knowledge on a specific subject. Your website visitors have come to your site seeking information. Any help you give them will go a long way toward giving your site relevance and authority as well as providing an improved user experience.

    Complementary linking

The links that you supply to your visitors should reflect your website theme or the subject of your message and content. Also, when search engines index webpages they are looking for this type of linking structure. The relevance of your links is paramount to satisfying visitor and search engines alike.

The key to website optimization is the well planned implementation of links that both tie together points of data and expand on information. This approach to linking will help in the improvement of your rankings on the internet as well as furnishing a pleasant experience for your visitors.

Remember, links and data paths should enhance the content of your website not detract from it.
