  • Search Engine Submission
Indexing your website in the search engines

    Submitting and resubmitting your website

The submission and resubmission of your website to the search engines insures that your site appears favorably in their organic (i.e. natural) search results. Initially, when your website is ready to be published to the Web you should tell the search engines. This is done by manually submitting your internet address to their data base. Each has it's own way of doing this but they all welcome newcomers by making the job easy. Once your website is indexed resubmit it whenever you make changes or update your content.

    Submitting your website

Submit your pages no more than once a week, or less, until you know you have been indexed. In fact search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN actively seek out new websites on their own. Don't submit your URL address more than once a week. Also don't submit more than five URLs from the same website in the same twenty four hour period. The slower you submit your website the better are your chances of avoiding problems.

After a day or two go to the search engine of your choice, type in the keywords you are interested in, and see if your site has been indexed. You may have to run through a number of pages to find your URL. Once you find your URL, you then know that you have been indexed. You may want to give this a few weeks to happen.

Once your website has been indexed your first priority should be to clean up your website navigation scheme. Be sure that the spiders have a clear path to every webpage in your site so that they can automatically update their index and include any changes you might make along the way.

An often used technique for website navigation is to create a webpage or sitemap that contains all of your main links. Then, link to this page from your home page and the search engine spiders will do the work for you by following these links deeper into your website.

    Search engine submission services

There are a multitude of search engine submission services available on the internet. Some are free and others are paid services. They all submit your website to various engines but the quality and level of search engine submissions varies with the service that you use.

You can submit your website without the need of hiring a submission service. The need for using such a service is primarily a matter of convenience, especially if you have multiple websites. To find submission services just do a search, on any of the search engines, for "submit website" and the results will point you in the right direction.

    Resubmitting your website

Submitting your pages too frequently could do you more harm than good. Also, you should not perform this too often as the search engines could see this as spamming. Over submitting is one of the biggest mistakes that many webmasters make and it is a waste of time.

That being said you should resubmit whenever you make changes to or introduce new content to your website. Search engines love fresh content. By telling them that you are updating the material presented on your site you are showing them that your site is alive and active. Resubmit your website in an intelligent manner and your ranking should improve.

    Renaming webpages

If it should ever be necessary to rename any of your main webpages there are some things you need to be aware of. At first you will see a drop in website traffic. Don't panic it is only temporary. It takes time for the search services to catch up with such changes. If your core content has not been drastically changed you will see a rebound within about a month. Your traffic will gradually begin to return as the search engine spiders reindex your webpages. Be patient and in time you will see your website traffic return to it's original level or even higher.

The best way to improve your visibility in the search engines is to add new and original content on a regular basis. The search engines look for this and it will cause them to take notice of your website. Just be sure that the material you present on your site is fresh, relevant and of good quality.
