    ROR/RSS sitemaps

ROR (Resources of a Resource) and RSS (Really Simple Syndication) are XML formats that describe the content of an internet document or your website content. This is done in such a way that the material presented by you can be easily classified by search engines.

These formats describe objects like sitemaps, products, events, reviews, jobs, classified ads and so forth in terms that are intelligible to the algorithms employed by internet search services and website classification software. By employing this type of document webmasters can be assured that the content and subject matter of their sites are correctly described to any interested parties.

    Creating a XML sitemap

Content objects are placed in a ROR feed called ror.xml or sitemap.xml. These files are typically located in the root directory of the document or website structure that it describes. There are several free internet services that can help you to create such a file. By searching the terms ROR or RSS sitemap generator many such entities can be located.

    Benefits of an XML sitemap

Search engines like Google or Yahoo crawl the web looking for ROR or RSS sitemaps to help them determine how to categorize the content of the websites they find there. This type of feed allows search engine spiders to quickly identify all of the content of a website. There are three main benefits to this:
    • Search engine spiders can correctly categorize the content of a website and incorporate it into their search results in a timely fashion. The quicker this is accomplished the better are your chances that you will rank high in their results.
    • An XML sitemap allows the search engine spiders to extract detailed information about the files and subject matter that makes up the content of your website. This ensures that your website content is properly classified in search results.
    • It allows the webmaster to optimize his site for the inclusion of its content into the search engines. Changes you make or any new websites that you might publish to the Web are quickly absorbed into the data banks of internet search services.

    XML sitemaps and website optimization

The inclusion of a XML sitemap in your website's root directory should be one of the first steps you take when optimizing your website. When you facilitate the access of search engine spiders into your site you are removing any stumbling blocks they might otherwise encounter. This enables you to concentrate your optimization efforts on your website's structure and your website content. Always include a XML sitemap in your root directory.
