Website Maintenance Plan
Performing a regular cycle of website maintenance and review

Regular website maintenance is a must!

In order to see continued growth of your website it is imperative that you perform a regular cycle of maintenance and review. Your website should never become static. Not only will this negatively effect your search engine ranking, over time, but will also cause you to lose returning visitors.

Recommended sequence of maintenance tasks

Below is a recommended sequence of tasks, that if performed regularly, will keep your website vibrant and growing.

Website Maintenance Plan

1- Performance Tracking:
Keep a constant check on your ranking, traffic patterns and visitor counts.
2- Analyze Competitive Sites:
Check high ranking websites for their use of keywords and placement of links.
3- Keyword Evaluation:
Constantly check keyword priority, remove poorly performing keywords and rewrite content.
4- Updating Content:
Update old content and add new content on a regular basis. Keep your website fresh.
5- Analyze your Website Structure:
Remove dead links and check the length of page visits and landing pages.
6- Development of Inbound Links:
Cultivate high quality inbound links. The quality of your website should attract high value links.

1- Performance Tracking:

  • Ranking

Keep an eye on your page rankings. Watch for swings in the placement of your top landing pages in the search engines. This can signal positive or negative website growth and point out trouble spots or areas of success.
  • Traffic patterns

Find out who is visiting your website and where they are coming from. Look for the day, time and frequency of their visits and if they are new or returning visitors. New visits show the effectiveness of your search engine placement and returning visitors show the quality of your content.
  • Visitor counts

This may seem obvious but knowing the number of visits for any given day or even season can tell you the overall effectiveness of your SEO efforts. Nothing tells the story better than numbers.

2- Analyze Competitive Sites:

  • Keywords

Check out websites that rank above you in the search results. Look for the keywords that they are using and how they are applied to their content. You may not be using your keywords properly or you may not be using the right ones and as a result are lagging behind.
  • Links

Who is linking to your competitors website? Try to get similar links. This can be a difficult proposition but good quality links are necessary if you want to maintain a dominate position in search results.

3- Keyword Evaluation:

  • Check keyword priority

Which of your keywords is showing the best results? Find them and build on them. Watch for good performing keyword phrases also. You may find unexpected phrases that the search engines have linked to, these are gold!
  • Remove poorly performing keywords

Of course there will also be keywords, that for one reason or another, just fail to perform well. Remove them and try other keywords. Just be sure that they stay on topic and you don't deviate from your main theme.
  • Rewrite content

Once you have decided upon which keywords to modify rewrite your content. As you rewrite your text keep in mind those good performing keyword phrases you've discovered. Incorporate them in with your keyword changes.

4- Updating Content:

  • Update old content

Never let your website content grow old. That's not to say that you must completely re-write every word but you should update your text whenever it becomes necessary. There are always some things that can be modified or re-written.
  • Add new content

Keep looking for new content to add to your website. By adding new pages on a regular basis you will get the attention of the search engines, improving your rankings. Also if you want to keep your visitors returning you must provide new content.

5- Analyze your Website Structure:

  • Remove dead links

Always be on the lookout for links that have expired or have been shut down. These will pop-up from time to time and are detrimental to your rankings. Dead links can cause search engines to downgrade your web position.
  • Check length of page visits

See how long your visitors stay on your landing pages. Find out which pages generate the most interest by the amount of time that visitors spend on them. Put your efforts into building on these pages and use what you learn to create new content.

6- Development of Inbound Links:

  • Cultivate high quality inbound links

Links from high ranking websites are a must for the serious webmaster. The greater the number of these sites that you have linking to your website the more relevant your website and landing pages will be to the search engines.
